Château Maris has been named “one of the five most environmentally-friendly wineries in the world” by WineSpectator and a “Sustainability hero” by Jancis Robinson MW. It was the first European vineyard to receive the B Corporation certification, a label recognized by the UN and European Commission – a certification held by just 27 wineries worldwide today. Maris boasts a world-first carbon-negative winery constructed from hemp bricks, while the vineyards are hand-harvested and tilled by a horse-drawn plough. Sales of their wine support local wildlife and biodiversity initiatives such as L’Aspas and La Masion de L’Abeille, and they even made headlines for shipping wine to the USA by sailboat! Winemaker Robert Eden, great nephew of Prime Minster Anthony Eden, thinks of his vineyards as complex living structures and takes great pride in the sustainability of the entire Estate.
