This Friday our Managing Director, Christopher Carson, has selected the Margaret River @evansandtate 'Smooth Operator' Cabernet Merlot as our staff wine pick.
The Smooth Operator is a proudly easy-to-drink red, whose ripe and intensely flavoured fruit was matured in fine grained oak barrels before extended maturation. The result is a mouth-filling combination of blackcurrant, violets and garden herb flavours framed with toasty oak. As Christopher praises, not only does it offer typical varietal characteristics, but it is soft and generous on the palette, with good length and elegance. We'll drink to that!
Do you know the touching story behind DAOU's flagship wine, 'Soul of a Lion'?
Georges and Daniel Daou grew up in Beirut, Lebanon, the sons of Joseph and Marie. Joseph was a self-made businessman, and at the time Beirut was known as “the Paris of the Middle East.” At the advent of the Lebanese Civil War, an errant rocket struck the Daou family home and Georges and Daniel were both gravely injured, as was their sister Michelle. Their parents nursed them back to health, then moved the family to safety in Paris.
Through it all, Joseph showed his sons the way. He exemplified the virtues of courage, belief and persistence, and his sons would later come to say that he had “the soul of a lion.” Eventually the brothers found themselves at the summit of what would become known as DAOU Mountain. It was here that Joseph gave them his blessing. In that moment, the family winery was born—and its crown jewel would be named for the man who made it all possible.
“The happiness we found on DAOU Mountain came from following our father’s example. Soul of a Lion is a tribute to the man who made it all possible.” — GEORGES & DANIEL DAOU
In the third of our Christmas wines mini-series, our Portfolio Ambassador McCombie MW highlights his top recommendations from leading single-estate focused Barossa Valley winery Hentley Farm. Today, the boutique Hentley Farm remains the only Barossa Valley winery to be named Australia's "Winery of the Year" by James Halliday, whose elegant wines speak rather than shout of their origin.

Made from 100% hand-picked grapes from one of the oldest vineyards in South Tyrol (dating back to 1899), @kellereistpauls 'Sanctissimus' Pinot Bianco Riserva is a true best in class example of Pinot Bianco.
It has more than a century under its belt yet has lost none of its strength – quite the contrary, in fact. This Pinot Bianco can stand proud among the most opulent wines, holding its own in every regard. Grown on the extremely steep slopes of the south-facing Vigna location below the church in Missian on low-yielding old vines, fermented gently on the skins in large clay amphorae, then matured in large wooden barrels made of locally grown oak, Sanctissimus is truly the jewel in the winery’s crown.
Its consistent high scores are a testament to this, with the 2016 receiving a @decanterawards Gold medal & 96 points, 95+ points from Robert Parker and more. The multi-layered 2016 delivers a complex aroma experience with notes of ripe apple, fine spices and sage. This develops on the dense and mineral palate, which is voluminous, juicy, creamy and persistent on the finish.

Zibibbo is one of more than 200 synoyms for Muscat of Alexandria, whose name derives from the Arabic word “Zabīb”, which means “raisin” (the grape is thought to have originated in Egypt). As the name suggests, it tends to be used to produce “passiti” dessert wines, but can produce outstanding dry wines.
Assuli’s beautifully aromatic Dardinello Zibibbo DOC Sicilia is a fantastic dry example of the varietal. Fresh and smooth, with intense aromas and flavours of peach and Sicilian citrus fruit, it is characterised by a pleasant balance between salinity and minerality. Not only a delicious and versatile partner to a wide range of dishes, it is fully sustainable and organic, and has recently received the Price Quality Award within Gambero Rosso’s Berebene 2022. What’s not to love?!
This week our Accounts & Administration Manager Francesca is shining a light on the 'Tralivio' Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC 2019 from Verdicchio pioneer @sartarelliwine, which she has been dreaming about since a visit to the winery this summer.
A multi award-winner, this wine is the product of carefully selected hand-picked grapes in Sartarelli’s best vineyards with an average age of 25 years, and a south exposure to the sun. The first vintage was produced in 1990, making it one of the first examples of a high-quality Verdicchio wine. The grapes for it are harvested later than Sartarelli's Classico, and it is deeper in colour with intense aromas of riper stone fruits and a touch of medicinal acacia notes. The palate is full, with great substance and power, and good acidity. A truly outstanding rich white for the winter!
In the second of our Christmas wines mini-series, our Portfolio Ambassador Peter McCombie MW highlights his top recommendations from pioneering Valpolicella producer Tenuta Sant'Antonio. Founded by four brothers in 1989, the family-run winery is one of the eleven families of Amarone, which now lays claim to over 100 hectares of vineyards in the Illasi and Mezzane valleys along with a state of the art ageing facility for their multi award winning Amarones.
How much do you know about the somewhat mysterious Turbiana grape?
Found growing on the southern shores of Lake Garda in the Lugana DOC region, the grape was historically thought to be related to the more simple Trebbiano grape, owing to its name at the time - Trebbiano di Lugana. It has since also been linked to Verdicchio, until earlier this year when DNA testing confirmed that Verdicchio and Turbiana are distinct varieties in their own right, despite being close 'relatives'.
Le Morette's Lugana Mandolara is produced exclusively from Turbiana from the single 'Mandolara' vineyard and is a beautiful unaged expression of the grape. Incredibly fresh and predominantly floral on the nose with notes of elderflower, the palate is complex with apple, peach, hints of melon and a touch almond.
