Bodegas Sonsierra, Crianza DOCa Rioja 2017
Rioja Alta, La Rioja – Spain
Sonsierra’s position, south of the Cantabrian Mountains and north of the River Ebro, creates an Atlantic microclimate with a Mediterranean influence which makes its terroir one of the best in all of Rioja for cultivating high- quality vines. The barrel-ageing process of this Crianza results in aromas of cocoa, vanilla and coffee, against a lively, fragrant background of ripe fruits and liquorice. The palate is well-rounded and harmonious, with an excellent blend of spices and other flavours typical of Tempranillo.
Marchese Raggio, Gavi del Commune di Gavi DOCG 2019
Gavi, Piedmont – Italy
Made from 100% handpicked Cortese grapes and produced organically, this is an excellent all-rounder Gavi di Gavi. The nose is pleasantly fruit-driven, clean and mineral, with evident floral notes and apple aromas. The palate is fresh, savoury, balanced and supported by a good structure and persistence. Excellent paired with well balanced, quality dishes with combinations of just a few ingredients in order to allow the complexity of the wine to shine through.
Villa Trasqua, Chianti Classico DOCG 2017
Chianti Classico, Tuscany – Italy
The nose leads with floral hints of violet and ripe red fruits (cherry and raspberry), followed by notes of sweet spices, including vanilla and liquorice. The palate is fresh, with pleasant tannins which make it vibrant and dynamic. Flavours are fruit-driven, featuring cherry and blood orange. The finish is long and satisfying.
Evans & Tate, Butterball Chardonnay 2019
Margaret River – Australia
This is an excellent delicious, rich and complex Margaret River Chardonnay that calls for richer Autumnal foods. The aromas and palate both display distinctly typical varietal characters of ripe peach, pears and melon framed with toasty oak, roasted spices and creamy, buttery notes that flood the nose and mouth. A perfect white for the turning of the seasons and a truly great drop for its price point!
Hentley Farm, Shiraz 2018
Seppeltsfield, Barossa – Australia
This consistently high-scoring estate Shiraz from James Halliday’s only Barossa Valley winery to be named Australia’s “Winery of the Year” never fails to impress. Blackberry and liquorice lead the way with dark chocolate and cigar box hiding in the background. Layers of rich fruit are loaded on the front of the palate followed by chocolate and vanilla in the middle. Great tannin structure throughout and the persistence you would expect from this leading, critically acclaimed estate.
Bodegas Y Viñedos Monteabellón, Verdejo 2019
Rueda, Castilla León – Spain
A highly expressive example of Verdejo from Rueda, a region renowned for its high-quality offering of this white native varietal. It offers exuberant floral and primary fruit aromas typical of the Verdejo variety, with hints of bananas and other exotic fruits including melon and grapefruit. Adequate acidity provides freshness and vigour, for a delicious and versatile white which makes an excellent alternative to Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc.
