Project Description
Assuli
Sicily
Assuli, which means “under the sun” in the local dialect, combines tradition and innovation in a wonderful western Sicilian location. Their 120 hectares of vineyards between Mazara del Vallo and Trapani benefit from conditions perfectly suited to growing indigenous varieties, including Nero d’Avola, Zibibbo, Insolia, Lucido, Grillo, Perricone, and Syrah. Their characterful wines are 100% organic and authentically reflect the terroir of the region.
Assuli is the result of the patient, painstaking and detailed restoration of an old 18th century baglio (farm with a courtyard at its center), respecting the original criteria of a building with the requirements of functionality and economic efficiency. And it is precisely the link with the territory that is the common thread of a story that began in 1948 when the Cav. del Lavoro, Dr. Giacomo Caruso, a successful Sicilian entrepreneur and a point of reference for the development of the economy of the area, realised the potential of the ‘Perlato di Sicilia’, a marble quarried on the nearby Mount Cofano. Alongside the development of the stone business, the Caruso family has maintained its roots firmly, expanding its countryside in the 2000s, already owned since the last century. Thanks to the careful maintenance of the traditional ways of processing native grapes, Assuli has obtained a production of excellent organic wines celebrated by many awards all over the world.
Today the third generation of the family – Roberto, Nicoletta and Michele – is now leading the company towards new goals, handing over the age- old expertise into the bottle creating wines that are absolutely genuine and of unmistakable personality. Each bottle tells a fascinating story, it’s a spokesman for the uniqueness that distinguishes Assuli.
Assuli wines are the expression of enologist Lorenzo Landi, who was born in Tuscany and graduated with honours in Agricultural Sciences at the University of Pisa. Lorenzo has benefited from experiences in Viticulture and Enology both in Italy and abroad, including Bordeaux and Burgundy.
Among the awards Landi boasts over 150 Tre Bicchieri and several Gambero Rosso Vino of the Year, 2017 Winemaker of the Year for Doctor Wine (Daniele Cernilli), as well as prestigious qualifications in the most significant international magazines such as James Suckling, The Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator, Decanter and Vinous.
