Poggio Abate is a special Brunello di Montalcino, with some unique characteristics; it is made from the best vineyards located near the famous SantAntimo Abbey. The grapes, 100% Sangiovese Grosso, are harvested by hand from the best parcels in the Fonteantica area and fermented on the skins in steel vats for 20 days with daily pumping over and delastage. A further 2 days of maceration takes place at a higher temperature before the wine is transferred to French oak barrels for 5 months with weekly batonnage followed by 10 months at rest and a further 15 months in Slovakian oak barrels.
Poggio Abate is a deep ruby red color with a bouquet of black cherries and red berries, complimented by balanced notes of vanilla and tobacco imparted by the expert use of oak. This wine is best served at 18° C in large glasses. It is ideal with roasted red meats, stews, game and aged cheeses.
