Valcanzjria is made from Chardonnay (50%), Carricante (45%) and Albanello (5%) grapes sourced out from Vigna Muti vineyard, a high-altitude vine-site located in the Monti Iblei/Valcanziria region (Ragusa). Here, in the mid-90s Dr. Salvo Foti planted a number of Burgundy clones of Chardonnay along with rare cuttings of Carricante from Mount Etna. The Carricante grape is a white-berried variety indigenous to the Etna volcano in Sicily. The resulting vineyard also features an overall vine density of 8,500 plant per hectare under Guyot training. The soil is calcareous (terre bianche) with medium clay content and a gravelly topsoil rich in iron.
Ripe and comfortable aromas of pineapple, hazelnut, and white flowers with an elegant yeasty nuance to it. Similarly, on the palate, the medium-bodied mouthfeel is supported by crisp acidity and persistent flavours of ripe yellow fruit and roasted hazelnuts. An easy-drinking, entry-level white wine meant for early consumption, delivering captivating impressions of complexity and ripeness, framed by a good acid backbone. Very flexible when it comes to food pairing.
