Project Description

Located in the heart of Frascati, the beautiful Fontana Candida cellar has stunning views overlooking Rome. The most renowned winery in the region, of the total 25 hectares under vine, it is the 13 hectare Santa Teresa vineyard which Fontana Candida has built its reputation on, producing both highly award winning Frascati Superiore’s: Luna Mater Riserva and Santa Teresa.

Under the watchful eye of winemaker, Mauro Merz, all white grape varieties from which Frascati derives: Malvasia Bianca di Candia, Malvasia del Lazio, Trebbiano Toscano, Greco (Trebbiano Giallo), Bombino Bianco and Bellone, are all grown with great success at Fontana Candida depsite Bombino and Bellone being almost extinct elsewhere in the region. These white varietals, along with Merlot (from which Kron IGT is made) and Montepulciano, Cesanese and Syrah (from which Roma Rosso DOC), thrive in the Mediterranean climate and deep, sandy, very water-absorbent soils produced from volcanic ashes. Mauro’s motto, “everything starts in the vineyards” is echoed in his approach – high density, low yield vines and careful, meticulous picking once the grapes are in their perfect, most expressive condition.
