Deep Woods Estate is perched high on a ridge which unfolds into a picturesque secluded valley bounded by stands of Jarrahand Marri trees; hence the name Deep Woods. Comprising a modern winery, vineyard, cellar door and homestead the winery, with its large natural spring, dense woodlands and spectacular views is also one of the region’s most scenic wineries.
Established in 1987 with plantings of Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Shirazand Merlot, Deep Woods Estate was acquired by the Fogarty Wine Group in 2005. Upon acquisition, FWG introduced a new vineyard maintenance program utilising sustainable vineyard practises to improve fruit quality and to produce loweryields. Subsequent plantings of Chardonnay and Semillon increased the area under vine to approximately 16 hectares, planted across 12 separate blocks.
The winery is now managed by Julian Langworthy who was shortlisted for Australian Winemaker of the Year in 2015.Julian grew up in Margaret River however his winemaking knowledge prior to joining Deep Woods was developed further afield: Domaine de la Baume (Languedoc-Roussillon), Wolf Blass (Barossa Valley), Wynns Coonawarra (Coonawarra) andKnappstein (Clare Valley). Now back ‘at home’, Julian and his team control all elements of the winemaking process, utilisinga combination of traditional and modern techniques from vine through to bottle.
